Depth conversion is made simple with software

Depth conversion is commonly used for drilling purposes. It is a method which is used to determine the depth of something underneath the surface. It is involved in seismic method of reflection which converts the time travel by the seismic wave to surface of the material underneath it. This method is based on the acoustic velocity of the subsurface.

It is useful in determining the structure under the surface so that the drilling can be done with ease without any problem. You never know which problem is waiting underneath the surface and may destroy the drill in some way resulting in failure of the project and wasting of money. This is why depth conversion becomes very requisite.

There can be a lot of variation in rocks below the surface and change in velocity. The reservoir under the surface of the earth can vary to a great range in matter of shape and size. The use of machine depends upon the type of rocks present there. Highly porous rocks can be easily drilled but a low porous rock can make it very hard. The sound waves are released from the truck and there is microphone installed at equal distance though which reflected waves can be captured. Then the time taken by waves to come back is converted into the distance or the depth. The depth conversion is done in steps:

Determining the layer: first of all the layering of the surface is determined with the help of geological knowledge. Generally, the layers are made of similar types of rocks. This can be done by reading the surface layer. There are chances or discovering multiple layers or sometimes there is only one layer present. It depends upon the seismic; the type of reading it receives.

Quality control: If there is certainty below the surface, there is consistent seismic reading noted. If there is inconsistency present in the reading then there is uncertainty below the surface also. The data is read in terms of horizon which is reflector that represents the change in the property of the rocks between their layers.

Depth convert: This is calculated by multiplying various functions. The layers are stacked for getting the  depth of each horizon.

This is done manually earlier which consumes a lot of time to determine the layers. But now with the help of software it can be done in lesser time. You can get accurate results from such software. With a little training, you can easily do the calculations.
