How to get started in 3D Printing

A 3D printer creates physical objects from digital designs.  They use different kinds of substances, varying from plastic to ceramic to wood-like material. Before proceeding to use this printer, you must have a design, a computer-generated model that tells the printer what to create. You may try using some of the many free models found online. Designs like water bottle-holders for a bike and vacuum-hose adapters will really assist you in coming up with these designs. You can also try using your own knowledge. This will need you to come up with an object using computer-aided design (CAD) software. The models then have to pass through slicing software. Here, the object is broken into flat two-dimension layers. The layers will then stack up to form the models. The appropriate part which a printer has to take while building the layers can also be determined by the slicing software. The 3D printer then proceeds to layering slices of the material you are using to print the object.

Should You Buy a 3D Printer?

Don’t rush into buying a 3D printer until when you understand how it works and all costs that come with it. Talk to friends who have 3D printers and they may even help you in knowing the best prints. Machines have become cheaper and easier to use with the advancement in technology. But it is not easy to just find a printer that is affordable. There have been quite a lot of customer-friendly printers in the market but getting a cheap one with high quality and excellent reliability is difficult. So, if you are interested in learning 3D printing and acquiring a good printer then you must be prepared.

Types of Consumer Printers

There are two kinds of 3D printers which can be used either for home purpose or as commercial 3D printers.

  • Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) is the most renowned of consumer 3D printing method. It is also calledfused deposition modeling (FDM).Successive layers of plastic filament are created by the FFF machines. The machines create the plastic filaments slowly. Weak points and rough texture can be built by layer-to-layer bonding. The increased competition and affordable printing materials have led these kinds of printer going at a cost of less than $1000.
  • Stereolithography (SLA) printers are another kind that provides higher flexibility and precision. Ultraviolet lasers are reflected by the SLA into a vat of light-enabled resin. This hardens the material layer by layer into shape. SLA allows smoother and more complex models by using a resolution of 0.05 mm. With this high flexibility and accuracy, the machine comes at a high cost of not less than $3000.

What are the roles of these 3D printers?

Industrial 3D printers are being used in most companies and they encompass different kinds of materials and technologies. They are now an essential to many industries and have a great role in different sectors. These roles played by these 3D printers include; eyewear, prosthetics, movie props, recreating fossils in paleontology, amongst many others.
